The Grand Canyon

Comments

The Grand Canyon is big. Very big, very deep and very wide. We decided to head out and check out canyon.
The night before was pretty big for Franger and Ben – the two boys managed to stay out until 09:00, 15mins before we got in the car and headed out in the morning. The four hour trip to the canyon was interesting, as Franger and Ben were moaning most of the trip and Greg was still drunk – it made for good entertainment. I even remember Franger saying he was going to fill the hole with his puke.

On the way we passed the hoover dam – a monumental effort in itself. We were running out of time so we just passed through but just looking out of the car was enough to get a grip of the scale of it. Also since September 11 the tourist areas have been shutdown at the dam because of terrorist threats. Luckily by the time we got the the Grand Canyon everyone was mostly sober and rested. Everyone was impressed soon as we jumped out of the van.

We represented Australia quite aptly by having cooeee contest in the canyon. I think I had the best call, and had quite a lot of strange looks from the locals. Some tried to imitate us and even got a yahoo or two. After talking to the locals of Las Vegas it seems that not many locals make it out to the Grand Canyon. This is unfortunate – sure it’s a full day of travelling to and back but it is an amazing natural wonder. I can only imagine what the original path finders of yesterday thought when they ran into it.

After a little searching we were able to find a section of the canyon that wasn’t fenced in and was easy to climb. I must admit that my fear of heights (or perhaps sense of self preservation? ) made it difficult to look over the edge – but I thought it was awesome where I got to.

Yeah – we thought that ledge was going to fall off too, that’s why we sent out Wilko first.

There are lots of photos we took of the canyon to try and capture it’s beauty and sheer size. Ben took a panoramic shot of the canyon which he’ll stitch together when he gets back home – in the mean time have a look at the depth of this baby.

It’s as far wide as the eye can see. We wanted to run down in the canyon and trek it, that would be an awesome trip. Though we needed to get back to the hotel for some needed rest – so we set sail and headed back to Las Vegas. By the time we got back it was dark and the Vegas lights shone bright – it was nice driving in and seeing the city. It’s as wide as you can see as well, strangely huge for a city with only 500 thousand residents in it (of course who knows how many travellers pass through at any moment).

Glad we went, I think Dan liked the road trip with the boys and was good having a chat with him in the car. Onward and upward!
